Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi entered the Libyan military academy in 1961, and graduated in 1966. Three short years later, he took over the government of Libya in a bloodless coup d’état.
At the time Gaddafi ceased power he was only a lieutenant. As dictator he made himself a Col. Which begs the question, during his 42 years as a dictator, why didn’t he make himself a General? And it’s my guess that he won’t be promoted in the after life.

Vinny, this is journalism at its finest; every major newspaper in the country envies you! Also, you’ve posted one of the better photos ever taken of Colonel Duck (who takes on a striking resemblance to one of my favorite movie stars). I will forward this to many serious history students, and art lovers.
After attending different schools together, Duck and I both graduated in 1966. The parallel continued as we participated in self-promotion. He went from Lieutenant Duck to Colonel Duck, and I went from Private Enterprise to Corporal Punishment.
He adopted the uniform to compete with his idol, Colonel Chicken, who ranked significantly in the pecking order, but the Duck got better billing. Each campaign ribbon represents a bottle of campaign consumed while on duty. He turned down the office of general three times because he thought general was not specific enough. Thank you so much for posting this timely story.
Hilarious. I love the way that duck thunk. He might’ve been Daffy w/a name like Quaddafi but now he’s just another dead duck.
Outstanding commentary. I’ll explore your work further.
